CAPITOL RIOTERS MEANT 'TO CAPTURE AND ASSASSINATE' Federal prosecutors offered an ominous new assessment of last week’s siege of the U.S. Capitol, saying in a court filing that rioters intended “to capture and assassinate elected officials.” The filing asks a judge to detain Jacob Chansley, the Arizona man and QAnon conspiracy theorist who was famously photographed wearing horns. This comes alongside the arrest of a retired firefighter amid allegations that he threw a fire extinguisher at U.S. Capitol Police officers. [Reuters]
ANGRY, ISOLATED, AND READY TO PARDON President Donald Trump, the first U.S. leader in history to be impeached twice, is spending his last days in the White House enveloped in rage and turmoil. Even as Trump spends time watching TV and venting to aides and confidantes, one tangible issue he has been focused on is how to apply his power to pardon before his term ends. He plans to depart Washington the morning of Joe Biden's inauguration to live at his Mar-a-Lago resort. [Reuters]
TRUMP ADMIN. EXECUTES COREY JOHNSON The Trump administration executed Corey Johnson on Thursday night, despite a Supreme Court ruling that executing people with intellectual disabilities like his violates constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. The government killed Johnson with a lethal injection of pentobarbital. Medical experts have warned that this would likely be even more painful for individuals recovering from COVID-19. Johnson was still experiencing symptoms. [HuffPost]
MCCONNELL HOLDS THE KEYS TO TRUMP'S FATE As the House was voting Wednesday to impeach Trump for a second time, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a note to GOP senators that he is undecided on whether to convict the president. This is likely intended to serve as a warning against further incitement and chaos from the White House. If McConnell were to actually vote against Trump, the math would shift dramatically in favor of conviction. [HuffPost]
GOP LAWMAKER BUYS BODY ARMOR Newly elected GOP Rep. Peter Meijer, who voted for Trump’s impeachment, said he’s buying body armor to protect himself from the president’s supporters. When MSNBC asked Meijer on Thursday if he had received death threats, the lawmaker said he wasn’t going to let anything deter him from his duty. [HuffPost]
CAPITOL IN LOCKDOWN At least four airlines announced additional security measures as federal and local officials began increasing protection around the Capitol after last week's deadly riot. The National Guard expects to send 20,000 members in for Inauguration Day. There is a new 7-foot fence surrounding the Capitol, one that officials say cannot be scaled. And there’s a massive perimeter around the White House. [HuffPost]
